πŸ“ Understanding Vertical PitchWork

Vertical pitch describes the angle of theEach finger hole alongis framed by pitch tiles, and the palm-to-fingertiptile's axisposition β€” that is, whetheron the holesheet tilts toward the palm (forward) or away from it (reverse).

DirectionWhat it meansTypical use
ForwardHole tilts toward the bowler's palm. The bottom of the hole leans indetermines the direction of the thumb. Most common for fingertip grips. Helps the finger seat naturally at the first knuckle without strain.
Zero (0)Hole drilled perpendicular to the ball surface β€” no tilt in either direction.Used for some conventional grips and as a neutral baseline.
ReverseHole tilts away from the bowler's palm. The bottom of the hole leans away from the thumb.Less common for fingers; used occasionally for conventional grips or when a bowler has a specific release preference.

  • βœ… Conventional grip: 0" to ΒΌ" forward is typical β€” conventional bowlers generally need less forward pitch than fingertip bowlers.
  • ❌ Vertical pitch beyond ΒΎ" forward for fingers is unusual and should be confirmed before drilling β€” it may indicate a measurement error or an atypical hand anatomy that warrants a closer fitting.

↔️ Understanding Lateral Pitch

Lateral pitch describes the angle of the finger hole along the thumb-to-little-finger axisReverse β€” whetheralways the hole tiltspoints toward the thumbouter side of the handsheet. orEnter awayyour fromreverse it.

DirectionWhat it meansTypical use
Toward thumb (inward / medial)Hole tiltspitch in the reverse tile.
  • βœ… Lateral β€” the Left and Right tiles, self-explanatory by position.
  • You don't set a direction from a dropdown β€” you enter the value in the tile that corresponds to the direction you want. Forward/reverse and lateral are separate tiles, so a finger can carry both at once.

Note: To apply a pitch against a tile's default direction β€” for example, Right pitch on the left finger β€” scroll to the absolute bottom of that tile's drop-down. There you'll find values listed as Rx, where x is the desired pitch. These cross-direction entries live at the very end of the thumb.list, Forbelow the standard values.

Note: On fingertip fits, it is quite rare to see forward pitches on the fingers β€” most fingertip finger pitch is zero or reverse. Treat a right-handed bowler, the middle and ringforward finger holespitch tilton left.

βš™οΈ Finger Pitch Is Fully Manual

There is no automation for finger holespitch. Every finger pitch value β€” mirrorsforward, thereverse, naturaland inwardlateral, curlon ofboth the fingers.

Zero (0)No lateral tiltfingers β€” hole drilled straight relative to the lateral axis.Used as a starting point or when a bowler has a very square finger position.
Away from thumb (outward / lateral)Hole tilts away from the thumb. Less common for finger holes.Occasionally used for bowlers with a pronounced outward finger angle or specific release mechanics.

Typical lateral pitch ranges for fingers

    • βœ… Most bowlers: 0" to ΒΌ" toward thumb for both middle and ring fingers.
    • βœ… Middle and ring fingers often carry the same lateral pitch, but they do not have to β€” record each finger independently.
    • ❌ Lateral pitch beyond 3/8" in either direction for finger holes is uncommonmanual anddata worth double-checking.

πŸ“‹ Entering Finger Pitch β€” Step by Step

    1. InLocate the specpitch sheet, tiles locatearound the pitch section for the middle finger and ring finger β€” each finger has its own vertical and lateral pitch fields.holes.
    2. For each finger, enter the verticalforward pitchor reverse value in the correct tile β€” theforward amountpoints in inches (e.g., ΒΌ, 3/8, Β½) β€” and selecttoward the direction:middle Forward,of Zero, the orsheet, Reverse.reverse toward the outer side.
    3. Enter the lateral pitch value and selectin the direction: Toward Thumb, Zero,Left or AwayRight fromtile Thumb.as needed.
    4. Repeat for both the middle and ring finger.fingers.
    5. Review all fourthe finger pitch entries (vertical + lateral for each finger) before moving on to thumb pitch.

Verify with Spectre team: confirm whether pitch is entered as

✨ Tips for Accurate Pitch Entry

    • βœ… Enter middle finger pitch and ring finger pitch separately β€” they are often the same, but do not assume. Many bowlers carry slightly different pitches on each finger.
    • βœ… When in doubt on lateral pitch for a new bowler, 0" to ΒΌ" toward thumb is a safe starting point. You can refine on future visits.
    • βœ… If a bowler reports finger soreness or difficulty releasing after a drilling, pitch is usually the first adjustment to consider β€” noting the original pitch values accurately makes future corrections much easier.
    • ❌ Do not confuse vertical and lateral pitch fields when entering data from a handwritten sheet β€” double-check the axis before saving.
    • ❌ Do not leave pitch fields blank if the original fitting sheet shows zero β€” enter 0" explicitly so the record is unambiguous.

IBPSIA tip: Spectre Cloud's auto-suggestion feature can recommend starting pitch values based on grip type and span measurements. These are reference points, not prescriptions β€” always defer to a measured fitting or a returning bowler's known preferences over a suggested value.
