In cross-section, most thumbs are slightly wider than they are deep, and they taper as they move from the surface of the ball toward the base. When a round hole is drilled to fit a thumb that is wider than it is deep, one of two compromises must be made:

  • Size to the depth — the hole is snug front to back. The thumb fits firmly in one axis, but binds or compresses in the wider axis, causing discomfort or an inconsistent release as the thumb is forced into a shape it does not naturally hold.
