2.3.6 Flip V/H on oval cuts — configuring your drill press orientation
Flip V/H on oval cuts — configuring your drill press orientation
2.3.6 oval
Drill presses and milling machines used in bowling pro shops are not all oriented the same way. Depending on how your machine is positioned relative to the ball — and how its axes are labeled — the vertical and horizontal movement directions that Spectre Cloud calculates may be the reverse of what your press expects. The H/V Flip setting lets you correct this in one step, without changing any of your oval width calculations or spec sheet data.
🛠️ Why Axis Orientation Varies Between Machines
Milling machines and drill presses come from different manufacturers with different conventions for which direction is "vertical" and which is "horizontal." Additionally, some shops mount their press in a non-standard orientation, or work with the ball positioned differently on the cradle. In any of these situations, the V and H values Spectre Cloud displays may be transposed relative to what your machine physically does.
- ✅ Some presses label their axes relative to the bit's movement — the direction the spindle travels is V, lateral travel is H.
- ✅ Others label axes relative to the table's movement — the opposite convention.
- ✅ A press mounted at an angle or rotated 90° from standard will need its axes flipped to match Spectre Cloud's output.
- ❌ Drilling with transposed V/H values will produce an oval oriented incorrectly — the cut will be rotated 90° from the intended angle.
Note: If your oval cuts are consistently coming out rotated 90° from the spec, this setting is the first thing to check. Enabling the flip will correct the orientation without requiring any changes to the underlying measurements.
🔄 What the H/V Flip Does
Enabling the H/V Flip swaps the displayed values for the vertical and horizontal movement directions throughout the oval calculator. The calculated oval width and diff values are unchanged — only the axis assignment of the two movement components is reversed.
| Flip Off (Default) | Flip On | |
|---|---|---|
| V value shown as | Vertical movement | Horizontal movement |
| H value shown as | Horizontal movement | Vertical movement |
| Oval width | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Diff (Decimal) | Unchanged | Unchanged |
| Spec sheet data | Unchanged | Unchanged |
Note: The flip applies to the display of movement direction values only. No spec sheet measurements, saved oval calculations, or bowler records are modified when this setting is changed. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm whether the flip also affects values transmitted to a tethered drill press, or whether it is display-only.
🛠️ Enabling or Disabling the H/V Flip
📋 How to Determine If You Need the Flip
If you are unsure whether your press requires the H/V flip, the quickest way to check is to drill a test oval on a scrap ball or plug and compare the result to the spec. Alternatively, consult your press documentation:
- Run an oval calculation in Spectre Cloud with the flip off.
- Note the V and H movement values displayed.
- On your press, identify which physical axis corresponds to V and which to H.
- If the press labels match Spectre Cloud's output — leave the flip off.
- If the press labels are reversed — enable the flip.
- Re-run the calculation and confirm the displayed values now match your press axes before drilling.
Tip: Do this check once when setting up a new press or when first configuring Spectre Cloud in your shop. Once confirmed, the setting can be left alone indefinitely — it only needs revisiting if you get a new machine or change your press orientation.
🏢 Multi-Press and Multi-Location Shops
If your shop operates more than one drill press, or if you manage multiple locations through a single Spectre Cloud account, bear in mind that this setting may need to differ between machines. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm whether H/V Flip can be configured independently per device or location, or whether it is a single account-wide setting.
- ✅ Single-press shops: set it once and you're done.
- ✅ Multi-press shops: if presses have different axis orientations, confirm with the Spectre team how to handle per-press configuration.
- ✅ Multi-location chains: coordinate with each location to confirm their press orientation before applying a shared setting.
☁️ Scope of This Setting
This setting is stored at the account level and syncs across all devices, consistent with other Bit/Edge Settings preferences. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm per-user vs. per-account/shop scope and whether per-device overrides are possible, particularly relevant for multi-press environments.

Tip: When onboarding a new staff member, walk them through this setting early — a new driller who doesn't know the flip is enabled (or disabled) may second-guess the values they're seeing and make unnecessary manual corrections at the press. A quick orientation to the Bit/Edge Settings page prevents that confusion.
