Oval Width Calculator — Bit Size vs. Decimal display

2.3.3   oval

Spectre Cloud's oval width calculator can display its results in two formats: Bit Size (fractional drill bit notation) or Decimal (inches expressed as a decimal number). This setting controls which format is shown throughout the oval calculator — choose the one that matches how your shop reads and communicates hole measurements.

🔄 The Two Display Formats

Both formats represent the same underlying measurement — only the notation differs. Use whichever format matches your drill press readout, your bit set labeling, or your personal preference.

Format Example Display Best For
Bit Size 1 1/16" Shops that reference drill bit sets by fractional size markings
Decimal 1.0625" Shops using digital calipers, CNC presses, or decimal-based measurement tools

Note: This setting affects how oval width results are displayed — it does not change the calculated value itself. Switching between formats at any time is safe and will not alter any saved spec sheet data.

🛠️ Changing the Display Format

  1. Navigate to Settings from the top menu.
  2. Locate the Bit/Edge Settings section.
  3. Find the Oval Width Calculator display option.
  4. Select either Bit Size or Decimal from the available options. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm whether this is a toggle, a dropdown, or a radio button pair.
  5. The change takes effect immediately — no save button is required. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm whether this setting auto-saves or requires an explicit save action.

📊 Bit Size to Decimal Reference

The table below covers the most common oval width values seen in pro shop drilling. Use it to verify your display is showing what you expect after switching formats.

Bit Size Decimal Equivalent
15/16" 0.9375"
1" 1.0000"
1 1/16" 1.0625"
1 1/8" 1.1250"
1 3/16" 1.1875"
1 1/4" 1.2500"
1 5/16" 1.3125"
1 3/8" 1.3750"
1 7/16" 1.4375"
1 1/2" 1.5000"

Tip: If your drill press uses a digital readout calibrated in decimals, the Decimal format will let you transfer oval width values directly to the machine without mental conversion.

☁️ Is This Setting Per-Device or Account-Wide?

Display format preferences in Spectre Cloud are typically stored at the account level and sync across all devices. This means changing the format on your desktop will also update how oval widths appear on a tablet or mobile device logged into the same account.

  • ✅ One change applies everywhere — no need to update each device separately.
  • ✅ Multi-staff shops: if different staff members prefer different formats, each staff account can maintain its own display preference independently. ⚠️ Verify with your Spectre team: confirm whether this setting is per-user or per-account/shop.

Tip: Not sure which format your shop uses? Check how your drill bits are labeled — if they read 1 1/8", use Bit Size. If your press readout shows 1.125, use Decimal. Either way, the math is identical.
