# Recording the details of the thumb measurements

This section will explain how to input all of the thumb measurements on the spec sheet.

# How to input the thumb hole information for an oval.

1\. This section of the spec sheet is for entering all of the thumb information. When you select an option, make sure the option you want is highlighted in dark blue. Using "CENTER" will result in the original measured pitch being in the center of the hole.

[![chrome_2Rmpwieq8J.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-2rmpwieq8j.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-2rmpwieq8j.png)

[ex:![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/XYaimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/XYaimage.png)

The starting bit is the the drill bit you use to make the oval thumb and it represents the front to back measurement of the oval. When you click on "Starting Bit", a selection box will open. Click on the down arrow and select the starting bit size.

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/oaJimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/oaJimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/Q9cimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/Q9cimage.png)

When starting bit is selected, the selection box will close and the size you chose will be displayed.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/Q6eimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/Q6eimage.png)

The next step is to choose the width of the oval. When you click on "Oval Width", the selection box will again appear. Click on the down arrow and choose the oval width, which is the measurement of the thumb at it's widest point (side to side).

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/8H3image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/8H3image.png)

When you make your selection, the box will close and the oval width will be displayed.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/vGOimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/vGOimage.png)

The next step is to choose the angle of the oval. Click on the button that says "Oval Degree". Once again, a selection box will open so you can choose the oval degrees from the drop down list (to the nearest 5 degrees). Once you have made your selection, the box will close and your oval degrees will be displayed.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/YJmimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/YJmimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/cyiimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/cyiimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/P5Qimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/P5Qimage.png)

The Taper is the final step of the thumb information. Click on "Taper" and when the selection box opens, click on the down arrow. Once you have made your selection, the box will close and the amount of taper will be displayed.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/eboimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/eboimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/s8Nimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/s8Nimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/vSNimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/vSNimage.png)

When all thumb information has been completed, click on "Calculate Oval". The program will then automatically display the vertical and horizontal coordinates of each cut needed to create your oval.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/bh6image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/bh6image.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/9e7image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/9e7image.png)

Click on "Taper" button to add the cut necessary to do the taper if a taper is indicated . The cut will be displayed 1/2.

Example:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/Dnjimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/Dnjimage.png)

Some bowlers may have some bumps above their thumb . If they have , click on the 1/2 back, 1/2 front, 1/4 back or 1/4 front buttons to add some extra small cuts necessary to produce a custom fit. All those selections are optional!!!

EX:

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/g3qimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/g3qimage.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/rt8image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/rt8image.png)

You can also create your oval thumb shape using a decimal measurement. Here’s an example, using the one above:

[![chrome_sudtOEgmGv.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-sudtoegmgv.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-sudtoegmgv.png)

[![chrome_NklYGDrXQX.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-nklygdrxqx.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-nklygdrxqx.png)

Oval width 39/64 = ( 0.609 )

[![chrome_7TIGpVnrQH.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-7tigpvnrqh.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-7tigpvnrqh.png)

[![chrome_Q87Zx9UbUz.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-q87zx9ubuz.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-q87zx9ubuz.png)

You can also work on building your oval using the decimal difference option. This will calculate the difference between the size of your oval and your starting drill bit. Here is the same example:

[![chrome_PmFdcot3Gc.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-pmfdcot3gc.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-pmfdcot3gc.png)

[![chrome_3paRshLVLu.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-3parshlvlu.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-3parshlvlu.png)

Oval 39/64 = ( 0.609) then 0.609 - 0.516 =0.093

[![chrome_uUL4gTb6T7.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-uul4gtb6t7.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-uul4gtb6t7.png)

[![chrome_K0j9uRNSvH.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-k0j9urnsvh.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-k0j9urnsvh.png)

Another option for creating your oval, for those of you who have a rotating jig, is making horizontal cuts only. First, you need to set your table to the determined angle, then make your oval cut in the horizontal direction. Here's an example:

[![chrome_OBldQDz9kV.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-obldqdz9kv.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-obldqdz9kv.png)

[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/image.png)

[![chrome_UGLSzRCz7n.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-uglszrcz7n.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-uglszrcz7n.png)

[![chrome_ogafVE5r9K.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-ogafve5r9k.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-ogafve5r9k.png)

The EDGE option is also for those who start from the edge of the thumb. Here is an example showing how everything is calculated from V/H cut. Using the "EDGE" setting will result in your original measured pitch be in the front (first cut) of the thumb hole.

5. Your round thumb is set to drill .

# Inputting a finger oval measurement (no inserts)

How to input a finger oval measurment ( no inserts )

# How to input a finger oval measurement ( no inserts)

1. Click inside the finger hole circle in the area that says "Hole Size".
2. Using the selection box, choose the correct drill bit size for each finger hole.
3. After it has been selected, it will be displayed "Hole Size" located on the Spec sheet.
4. Example: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/uH4image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/uH4image.png)

    5. Click inside the Hole Size section to get the drop down list:
    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/VOdimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/VOdimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/k9Cimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/k9Cimage.png)

5. Next step is to find the oval width . When the size is selected, calculate the difference in decimal measurement (thousandths of an inch) between your finger drill bit and the oval width.
6. Example: Ring finger size is 39/64 ( 0.609) - 35/64 ( 0.578) = 0.031"
7. Enter the difference in the "Oval" section located on the spec sheet then press check button to confirm .
8. Example: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/oCDimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/oCDimage.png)

    9. Click in the oval section in each finger to open the Oval cut amount box and type in the oval amount for each finger:

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/bUWimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/bUWimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/dv9image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/dv9image.png)

For the Middle finger the process is exactly the same as the ring finger by determined the oval width and making the difference from the drill bit .
    Example : oval width 5/8 ( 0.625) then 5/8 (0.625) - 37/64 ( 0.578) =0.047
9. [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/gvwimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/gvwimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/WPNimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/WPNimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/3eBimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/3eBimage.png)
10. We recommend making your finger cuts AWAY from the bridge, so cut the oval to the left for the middle finger and cut to the right for the ring finger.

    4. You are all set to drill the thumb !!!!
    5. The process is the same with the pre-sized oval sleeve thumb as the round thumb.
    6. Note: If you are using either a Turbo Xcel Oval or a Contour Oval thumb insert, you must align the oval to the proper angle for the bowler before you glue it in permanently.

# Understanding Terminology , acronym, definition

Understanding Terminology , acronym definition

# Understanding the acronyms and abbreviations you will use in the spec sheet

1. On the spec sheet you will see 4 options :
2. "F" for Full span
3. "C" for Cut to Cut
4. "O" for Outer to cut
5. "H" for Hole to Hole
6. see the picture [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/HVPimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/HVPimage.png)
7. In a conventional drilling with no inserts, F (Full), C (Cut to Cut) and H (Hole to Hole) are all exactly the same. It's possible that you could use the O (Outer to Cut) if you have chosen to use a pre-sized thumb insert
8. In a finger tip drilling, we will determine the "F" full span 1st (see example in the picture below): [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/ao2image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/ao2image.png)
9. The "C" Cut to cut is the measurement from the edge of the actual thumb hole to the edge of hole for the finger inserts. By definition, the Cut span is the full span - the thickness of the inserts. If not using inserts then the full span is the same as the cut to cut span.
10. No Inserts example : [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/TMuimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/TMuimage.png)
11. If using inserts you can select the type of inserts determined by clicking the "Inserts" section see the picture below : [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/cgyimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/cgyimage.png)[![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/nIDimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/nIDimage.png)

When the selection of the insert type and size is made, Spectre will automatically calculate the cut to cut spans and the drill hole size required for that insert. Example:

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/87qimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/87qimage.png)
12. The "O" Outer to Cut section is measured manually when the ball is completely drilled. This is to make it easier the next time you drill a ball for the same bowler. The Measurement should be shorter than your "C" ( Cut to Cut ) Span .
13. Select the type of swicth grip use on "Thumb Insert Type" section [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/xHtimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/xHtimage.png)
14. The option of switch grip are : Turbo Switch Grip , JOPO Interchangeable or Vise-IT . EX: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/rgoimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/rgoimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/TMaimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/TMaimage.png)
15. JOPO Interchangeable and Turbo Switch Grip require the use of a 1 1/2" drill bit to accommodate the Outer sleeve. See the picture below . You will find on "O.D" section of the thumb . [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/bHkimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/bHkimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/hWsimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/hWsimage.png)

    [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/1rAimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/1rAimage.png)
16. If you use Vise-IT system four drills bit is available see the picture below [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/9hGimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/9hGimage.png)

17. The "O" (Outer to Cut) measurement is the distance from the edge of the outer sleeve ( Turbo or JOPO) or top sleeve ( Vise-it System) to the edge of the hole of fingers see the example below: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/Cc0image.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/Cc0image.png)
18. The "H" ( Hole to Hole) is the measurement from the edge of the drilled hole for the fingers to the edge of the drilled hole for the thumb insert. In this example, we take the measurement of the "O" span minus the thickness of the outer sleeve (1/16") See example: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/1IOimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/1IOimage.png)
19. If you are using any lateral pitch on the thumb, you add it manually on "Right" of "Left" section based on what is required Example: [![image.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/scaled-1680-/RqBimage.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-05/RqBimage.png)

**In the "Arsenal" section, the "Hole Depth" option is designed to indicate the desired depth of the finger and thumb holes — for example:**

[![chrome_abRZ53tJDL.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-abrz53tjdl.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-abrz53tjdl.png)

Click on the circle of the hole to indicate the depth, for example:

[![chrome_DL8nZtmUCl.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-dl8nztmucl.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-dl8nztmucl.png)[![chrome_5fI3d2H77f.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/scaled-1680-/chrome-5fi3d2h77f.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2025-07/chrome-5fi3d2h77f.png)

Once you have entered your desired hole depths and specified your chosen layout based on your PAP , you can visualize it in 3D by clicking on "3D".

This is an example for layout 40 x 4 x 40 based on PAP ( 4 1/2 X 3/4 UP ) in Dual angles :

[![chrome_X139FySSLW.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/chrome-x139fysslw.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/chrome-x139fysslw.png)

**You can convert this layout on VLS system for those using this process. Ex:**

[![chrome_zUG6wV9tGn.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/chrome-zug6wv9tgn.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/chrome-zug6wv9tgn.png)

[![chrome_s4vpoAXVuB.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/chrome-s4vpoaxvub.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/chrome-s4vpoaxvub.png)

After clicking YES , the layout is now coverted to VLS layout. In this exemple the Dual Angle based on 4 1/2 x 3/4 Up PAP 40 x 4 x 40 will convert to ( 4 x 3 7/8 X 2 3/8 ) on VLS system see this exemple :

[![Xd0Wc43Prx.png](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/scaled-1680-/xd0wc43prx.png)](https://wiki.spectrebowling.com/uploads/images/gallery/2026-01/xd0wc43prx.png)
